Chapter Nine

When I woke up the next morning, I had to remind myself the night before wasn’t a dream. The card I held within my hands crumpled proved it.

William was already in the bathroom doing his thing, and Z was still in bed with his arm wrapped around my body, keeping me next to him.

I drew my hand from in between us to get a better glimpse at the card. He shifted back to rub his nose, and I took the opportunity to roll away.

“Oh, no you don’t,” Z grumbled as he captured me mid turn. He tugged me back into him once more, but this time I was facing away and could feel every line of body behind me. His nose met the crook of my neck, sending tingles down my spine. “You doing okay today?”

Understanding what he asked, I let my hand relax on his forearm around my waist and settled in. “Yeah. Yesterday was just overwhelming, but today will be easier.”

He tightened his arms for a moment in a hug, then relaxed. “Like the doc says, ‘One day at a time. It’ll get easier.’ ”

An unladylike snort came out of me. “Oh, like you did at the gas station when we came up?”

His teeth nipped my shoulder, then he kissed it. “You have to admit, that place was a ransacking ready to happen. The cashier had no idea I had taken any of that stuff, and I wasn’t even trying.” He sounded offended. Like, the guy was nuts for not noticing.

Giving his forearm a whack, the business card slipped from my fingertips. Z lifted his head and snatched the card before I could even retrieve it. “What’s this?”

I wriggled around to grab it back, but he scooted away from me, moving off the bed. “Why would you need a lumber yard card, Cass?” His head snapped up from reading it as he waved it my way, his light blue eyes dark with confusion. “And where did you get it?”

I rolled off the bed so we were on either side. Me by the nightstand, him by the wall nearest the bathroom.

At that point, my mind was struggling to come up with a reasonable explanation of how I got the card. I barely believed it myself. The shower still ran, and should I wait for William so I didn’t have to explain it twice. My lips twisted. “Can I explain it when William gets out? I don’t want to explain it twice.”

Dark eyebrows rose as he tapped the card against his palm. “It’s that important?”

I shrugged, not sure. Everything seemed silly in the light of day. Unbelievable. I believed what I saw the day the wolf attacked me. I had the scars. The night before, I’d seen Sam’s scar, but were the lumber guys something I should concern myself with? They might have been attacked, but what if they were crazy freaks who designated themselves as werewolf hunters? It all seemed ridiculous now. And why were they staying in
